How “The Big Pattern Collection” Was Born

When I first started drawing patterns, they weren’t even called Zentangle yet. Back then, it was just… doodling. I would find myself sketching little shapes and lines on the corners of to-do lists, in notebooks, on the back of receipts—wherever I could. I didn’t think much of it. It was just something that felt good to do. Meditative. Fun.

Then Zentangle became a thing—an actual method, with its own philosophy and a name that made this simple act of drawing feel suddenly… official. And I loved that. The practice grew, the possibilities exploded. But my way of collecting patterns? Not so much.

Over the years, my little scraps of paper multiplied. I had notebooks full of ideas, cards taped to sketchbooks, envelopes stuffed with inspiration. But when I wanted to sit down and draw, it was always the same story:
“Where was that one pattern again?”
“Did I draw it in the blue notebook or on that random sticky note?”

And honestly, there’s one thing I don’t enjoy: interrupting my cozy drawing time to scroll through my phone for ideas. I want my sketching sessions to be phone-free. Just me, my pen, and a moment to breathe.

So I started organizing my patterns. First in folders, then in a proper notebook. Eventually, it turned into a real system. And then—bit by bit—into a book.

That’s how The Big Pattern Collection was born.

It’s a book full of hand-drawn patterns, made for exactly those quiet, cozy moments when you want to draw without digital distractions. Whether you’re new to tangling or have a desk full of pens already, this book is for you if you love having your inspiration right at your fingertips—literally.
